I try to live up to it every day. My name is Omotola Afouda, and I’m an Artificial Intelligence undergraduate. So far, my models have looked at traffic jams filmed from above, maize and sorghum harvests, and 7,043 customers whose departures I had to guess.
What fascinates me in data science is the revelation: a raw dataset is a puzzle whose picture nobody knows yet, and I don’t stop before I see it appear.
It all starts in front of a screen. Black Panther: a technological, brilliant, sovereign Africa. Between two scenes, a question settles in: what if it wasn’t only fiction?
The question becomes a direction. Enrolling in an Artificial Intelligence degree. Mathematics, code, the first lines of Python: the dream gets a syntax.
First analyses, first pipelines, first models that predict: the churn of 7,043 customers, customer segments, sales trends. A lot of attempts, a lot of starting over.
Second prize at a hackathon in 48 hours with SkillZ. A model that learns to spot the vehicles the previous one let slip at the back of the frame. A regression on maize, rice, sorghum and millet yields. The fiction of the beginning has become serious work.

My clearest memory is a defeat: a game that collapsed and taught me more than all my wins. Since then, I lose without drama, I replay the moves, I look for the moment everything tipped, exactly like debugging a model. I’m a beginner and I own it. I often lose. I always learn.

Vinland Saga transformed me more than anything else: watching Thorfinn lose himself and then rebuild convinced me that you can always choose who you become. If I had to draw myself, I’d be a mix: Thorfinn’s redemption, Erwin’s vision, Tanjiro’s stubborn gentleness, Mikasa’s loyalty, Akame’s determination.
Afro, French and American rap, amapiano, pop: anything goes, depending on the mood of the day and how stubborn the bug is. Some tracks are armour, others are archives. And on the worst bugs, the right track is sometimes silence.

Marvel gave me the spark, and Black Panther made it unforgettable: that beauty that finally looked like us, big and on screen. That day, a proud, technological Africa stopped being a hypothesis. And Fast & Furious reminded me of one simple thing: you go further when you move as a family. The big screen taught me to dream wide; it’s up to me to write the sequel for real.
Becoming for someone else the mirror I was looking for: that would already be a success.
One day, I’ll move to the other side of the camera: data science explained in French, the journey of an AI student in Benin, and pieces of my life, if the heart follows.
